AC Replacement in Hermann, MO

AC replacement in Hermann comes down to one decision: is the next repair worth paying for on this unit? We put the repair price and the replacement price side by side. If replacing wins, we swap the outdoor unit and the matched indoor coil and check the system you are keeping.

When is it time to replace your air conditioner?

Replace when the repair stops making sense for what the unit has left. This page is for homes that already have central air. If yours never did, see our first-time AC installation page. If the unit only needs a part, start with AC repair.

ENERGY STAR lists an air conditioner over 10 years old, frequent repairs and rising bills among its replacement signs. That is a reason to get a price, not a verdict. Our guide to when an old AC is not worth fixing walks through the comparison.

Need AC Replacement?

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM. Call and we will sort out the next step.

R-22, R-410A and what your data plate means

Check the refrigerant first, because it decides which options exist. ZIP 65041's largest housing groups date to the 1970s and 1980s, so plenty of local systems are second or third units of mixed age.

The data plate shows the refrigerant type, which often decides the repair question.

If the plate says R-22

The EPA's rule leaves you free to keep running it, and repairs remain legal. An R-410A outdoor unit cannot simply replace it, though: the EPA says the R-22 indoor coil is incompatible because of the pressure difference. A failed R-22 system usually means a whole new system.

If the plate says R-410A

You have more room. The EPA says a faulty condensing unit or coil can be replaced with a similar R-410A part. Parts may get harder to find as supplies shrink, and that belongs in your repair math.

What a full swap triggers

Replacing the outdoor unit and the indoor coil together counts as a new system under EPA rules, even if the lines stay. Since January 1, 2026, a new split system needs a refrigerant rated under 700 for global warming potential, so your quote will show R-454B or R-32.

New AC unit choices: efficiency and the matched coil

Buy the pair, not the box. AHRI's guidance is that a new outdoor unit without a properly matched indoor unit may miss its promised efficiency, and at worst the mismatch can stress the system into early failure. Natural Resources Canada says the same about the coil. Ask for the AHRI reference number and look it up.

A new outdoor unit needs a matched indoor coil to reach its rated efficiency.

On efficiency, the federal floor for a split-system AC in Missouri's region is 13.4 SEER2 for units under 45,000 Btu/h. A high efficiency AC costs more up front, and ENERGY STAR says a correctly installed certified model can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs. Your payback depends on run hours, and Hermann averages 27.6 days over 90°F annually (BestPlaces).

Sizing is the other choice. Do not copy the old tonnage: ask for a load calculation, since the old unit may have been oversized or the house may have changed.

What is included in an AC replacement

  • Refrigerant recovery from the old system, then removal of the old equipment
  • A new outdoor unit and matched indoor coil, with the AHRI match on paper
  • An inspection of the line set, replaced or reused according to the manufacturer's requirements
  • A check of the pad, clearances, disconnect and electrical connections
  • A new drain connection and a look at the condensate pan
  • Thermostat compatibility, updated if needed
  • A full charge, startup and airflow check

Swapping a failed AC, start to finish

  1. We confirm the failure and read the data plate on both units.
  2. We check the sizing and look at the ducts and the furnace blower.
  3. You get a quote for the repair, if one is reasonable, and for the replacement.
  4. We settle the mechanical permit and order the matched equipment.
  5. We recover the old refrigerant and remove the old unit and coil.
  6. We set the new coil and outdoor unit, then braze and pressure-test the connections.
  7. We evacuate the lines, charge to specification and start the system.
  8. We measure the temperature split and airflow, and explain the filter and thermostat.

Ask for the expected duration on your quote, because a duct change or a tight attic will lengthen the job.

AC replacement cost: what moves the number

Expect the price to follow the equipment, the access and anything found along the way. HVAC Project Cost's July 2026 figures put a 3-ton, 14 to 16 SEER2 central AC at $4,800 to $7,800 installed in St. Louis, covering the condenser, coil, charge and labor. The same source's 2026 range for an AC and furnace together is $8,000 to $17,000. Those are regional figures, not our prices.

  • Ductwork: priced separately, and only if the system needs it
  • Efficiency: higher SEER2 units sit toward the top of the range
  • Coil access: a coil in a tight attic or closet takes longer
  • Electrical: an old disconnect or undersized wiring adds cost
  • Furnace: an older blower may have to go at the same time

On rebates, read your bill first. Hermann city customers buy gas and electric from the municipal system, so an Ameren program should not be assumed. For Ameren customers, FastTrack PAYS needs a participating contractor, and amounts change, so check Ameren's current chart. No federal HVAC credit applies to 2026 installs, so check with your tax adviser.

Why Brian Grannemann Services for AC replacement

  • A Google reviewer called out our "quick and great response to air conditioning repair," so your replacement opinion comes from a shop that also does repairs.
  • Weber S. has used us about a half dozen times and describes the company as "fair and responsive to your needs," which is what a repair-or-replace conversation depends on.
  • Heating is part of the same trade here, so the furnace, the coil and the wiring get looked at together.
  • We have worked from Hermann since 1998, and the office is at 124 E 10th St.

Protecting the new unit in the years ahead

Register the equipment, keep your paperwork with the data plate photo and check the filter monthly. A yearly AC tune-up keeps the coil clean and the charge verified.

Call (209) 563-1270 for a side-by-side price. We handle AC replacement from Hermann out through Morrison, Owensville, Bland and Linn.

Good to know

AC Replacement questions

How do I know if my AC uses R-22?

Read the data plate on the outdoor unit, where the refrigerant type is usually printed near the model and serial numbers. Many units built before 2010 used R-22, though not all did. Send us a photo if the plate is faded, and we can usually work it out from the model.

Can I replace only the outdoor unit?

Sometimes. The EPA says a failed part on an R-410A system can be replaced with a similar R-410A component, so that can work on a newer system. An R-22 system is different, because its indoor coil is not compatible with an R-410A outdoor unit. Ask to see the AHRI match before you agree.

Do I have to replace my R-22 system?

No. The EPA does not require homeowners to replace working R-22 equipment. What changes is the repair math, since production ended in 2020 and supply is reclaimed. There are no drop-in replacements, and the EPA warns that R-22a is flammable and not an acceptable substitute. Keep running it until a repair says otherwise.

Should I replace my furnace at the same time as my AC?

Look at the furnace's age first. A furnace typically lasts 15 to 20 years with maintenance, so a unit near that range deserves its own quote while the coil and blower are already being worked on. A younger furnace can stay, provided its blower suits the new coil and the airflow checks out.

Should my new AC be the same size as the old one?

Not automatically. Your old unit may have been oversized from the start, and the house may have gained insulation or windows since then. Ask for a Manual J load calculation rather than a copy of the old tonnage. In a humid river valley, a smaller correctly sized unit often removes moisture better.

My AC died in a heat wave. How fast can it be replaced?

We cannot promise a date until we know the equipment and the job. Call as soon as it happens and tell us what the unit did. The office is open weekdays from 8 AM to 4 PM. Having a data plate photo ready, and knowing where the indoor coil sits, helps us plan the visit.
