Propane Furnace Service in Hermann, MO
Past the last gas main, an LP furnace is usually what stands between a farmhouse and a freezing night, and it does not run on the same parts or settings as the natural gas unit in town. Our propane furnace service in Hermann and the surrounding countryside covers no-heat repair, burner and venting checks, propane conversion and replacement.

Signs an LP furnace needs service
Some propane problems can wait until morning and some cannot. Yellow flames, soot and a CO alarm are stop-now signs, so shut the furnace off and call. The rest of this table tells us what to bring.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| No heat, thermostat calling | Empty tank, igniter, flame sensor, control board | Read the tank gauge |
| Burners light, then drop out | Dirty flame sensor, low gas pressure | Note how long it stays lit |
| Yellow or lazy flame, soot | Wrong pressure, dirty burners, poor combustion air | Shut it off and call |
| Rotten egg odor | Possible leak | Leave and call from outside |
| CO alarm sounding | Venting or heat exchanger problem | Everyone out, call 911 |
| Tank drains faster than last winter | Leak, short cycling, failing heat pump on dual fuel | Compare delivery tickets |
Odor is not a reliable alarm on its own. NIOSH warns that the odorant in propane can fade, and the Propane Education and Research Council recommends a propane detector, plus CO alarms on every level of the home.

What makes rural propane heat different
An LP furnace on a farm lives a harder life than a gas furnace on a city street. The fuel is delivered, not piped, and a problem at the tank looks like a furnace failure from inside the house. These are the conditions we plan for on rural heating service around Gasconade County.
- Run-outs in cold snaps. Deliveries get harder when lanes ice over, and a nearly empty tank loses pressure as the temperature falls. Reorder well before the gauge runs low, not when the forecast turns.
- Long rural power lines. An ice storm can leave a full tank and a furnace that cannot start. Short power blips can also confuse older control boards.
- Dust and pests. Gravel lanes, grain and hay put fine dust into furnaces and return ducts. Spiders and mud daubers like burner tubes and vents.
- Older farmhouses. With 30.7% of Hermann homes dating to 1939 or earlier (Point2Homes), we often find equipment added to basements that were never planned for it. Combustion air and venting deserve a close look.

How do we inspect a propane furnace?
We inspect from the fuel inward, because a pressure problem can masquerade as a bad part. We start by confirming the appliance was actually set up for LP, since a furnace moved or converted years ago may not match its label.

Then we check gas pressure at the valve against the data plate, watch the flame through a full cycle, clean and test the flame sensor and igniter, and inspect the heat exchanger. We finish with the flue draft and a combustion check, which tells us what is really going up the vent.

Repair, propane conversion or propane furnace replacement?
Which way to go depends on the furnace's age and the failed part. We give you the numbers and you choose.
- Propane heater repair. The right call for igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, inducer motors and boards on a furnace with years left.
- Propane conversion. Sensible when a natural gas furnace ends up on a tank, or when moving equipment between fuels. Conversion needs the manufacturer's kit, orifices sized from its table and the labels that come with it.
- Propane furnace replacement. Worth pricing once a furnace reaches its usual 15 to 20 year span, or if the heat exchanger has failed. Replacement also opens up a heat pump pairing, covered on our heat pump installation page.

What is included in propane furnace service in Hermann
A service visit should end with safe combustion and a plain account of what we found. Here is how it runs.
- We ask about the symptom, the tank level and your last delivery.
- We confirm the fuel setup and read the data plate.
- We inspect burners, orifices, igniter and flame sensor.
- We check gas pressure at the furnace.
- We inspect the heat exchanger, flue and combustion air.
- We test safety switches and the thermostat call.
- We walk you through the findings and price any repair up front.
- We run a full heat cycle and confirm the flame and draft.

Parts for older LP furnaces can take longer to find, so read us the model number when you call (209) 563-1270. It saves a second trip, and that counts when you are 43 minutes out toward Bland.
What should you budget for LP furnace work?
For St. Louis, Angi's 2026 average furnace repair is $238, most landing between $113 and $364, with labor at $125 to $150 an hour. Fixr's national average for propane units is higher, just under $580. For a propane furnace installed, Fixr lists an average of $4,800, with most at $3,000 to $8,000. A whole-home tank runs $600 to $2,500. All of these are outside figures from 2026, not our prices.
Distance, venting changes, a move from 80% AFUE to a condensing furnace and part availability all move the bill. Federal minimum efficiency for gas furnaces is 80% AFUE. Ask us for a clear, upfront quote before you decide.
Why Brian Grannemann Services for propane heat
- We have served the Hermann area since 1998, so we plan for the fuel and the drive that rural work involves.
- Jo M. wrote about Brian making an evening furnace repair in a severe cold snap with fresh snow falling. Treat that as one customer's account, since we keep weekday office hours, 8 to 4, and cannot promise it.
- Donna M. wrote that he "uses every safety precautions," which is what combustion work calls for.
- We handle electrical work too, so a failed furnace circuit does not need a second call.
Keeping a farm's LP system ready for freeze season
Book service in early fall, read the gauge weekly during cold spells and keep a clear path to the tank for the delivery truck. Replace filters more often during harvest and hay season, and test CO alarms monthly. Our guide to propane versus electric heat helps if you are rethinking the fuel.
We reach rural homes across the region from Hermann, including Morrison, Owensville, Bland and Belle. If the furnace is out now, our emergency furnace repair page lists what to do first.

Propane Furnace Service questions
My propane tank ran out. Can I just refill it and relight the furnace?
No. The Propane Education and Research Council says a qualified professional must check for leaks when the gas is turned back on, and you should never turn it on at the tank yourself. Call your supplier for the delivery and leak check, then call us if the furnace will not light afterward. Air in the line often takes more than one try to clear.
Can a natural gas furnace be converted to propane?
Usually, if the manufacturer makes a kit for that model. A propane conversion swaps the burner orifices and adjusts the gas valve, and kit instructions are written for qualified technicians. It is not a homeowner job, because a wrong orifice can overfire the furnace. We read your data plate first to confirm the right kit and altitude table.
How often should a rural LP furnace be serviced?
Once a year, before freeze season. Dust from gravel lanes and hay, plus spiders in the burners, are the common enemies on a farm. A yearly check covers the burners, igniter, flame sensor, heat exchanger and venting. It also gives you a chance to find a weak part in October, when a slow part order will not leave you cold.
Does a propane furnace work during a power outage?
No. The fuel is on site, but the blower, igniter, control board and inducer all need electricity. Rural lines can take a while to come back after an ice storm, so a generator or transfer setup is worth planning. Have an electrician size it for your furnace, and never run a generator inside or near an open window.
Is it the furnace or the tank that is making my house cold?
Check the tank first. If the gauge is low, call your supplier, because propane pressure also drops in deep cold and a nearly empty tank can starve a furnace. If there is fuel, check the thermostat, filter and breaker. If those are fine, call us with the furnace model number. Do not keep resetting a furnace that has locked out.
Do you work on the propane tank itself?
The tank and its first-stage regulator normally belong with your propane supplier, especially if they own the tank. We focus on the furnace and what happens at the appliance: burners, valve, venting and combustion. If our checks point to low pressure or a line problem, we will tell you what we measured so your supplier can act on it.
